I am on an unintended mission this week to locate and report about gluten free items available at various restaurants.
Today’s find was gluten free cookies at Z Cafe. (http://www.z-cafe.net/) Not only can you get any pizza on the menu on a gluten free crust for an additional $2, but now the restaurant has added gluten free cookies to tempt your sweet tooth. The cookies are baked by Wow Bakery in Kent, Washington (http://www.wowbaking.com/) and are available in three flavors, chocolate chip, ginger molasses and Oregon oatmeal. They are individually packaged and are segregated from the other cookies the restaurant offers for sale.
I tried the chocolate chip and was surprised by the fact that it did not taste gluten free!!! However, a word of caution for those of you who have other food allergies, the cookies do contain milk, eggs, soy and traces of nuts. The 1.4 ounce cookie is 340 calories! (The package indicates that the single cookie constitutes two servings which each serving accounting for 170 calories.) Again, going back to my adage that if it is a baked item marked gluten free, it is laden with calories!
It is good to have once in a while but for most part, I stay away from gluten free baked items.
